Green Building

img Green Building is the responsible approach to design and construction which considers the entire lifecycle of a structure. This sustainable approach maximizes energy and resource efficiency, while minimizing the negative effects on the environment and the people who live or work in the building.

img From site planning that eliminates suburban sprawl, to implementing energy efficient technologies, once abandoned urban areas are reclaimed and renovated for the benefit of the entire community.

What are the Benefits of Green Building?

  Significant savings in utility costs
img Features like ENERGY STAR appliances, insulated roofing, high-efficiency heating and air conditioning systems, high-performance wood windows and six inches of blown in cellulose wall insulation all reduce the amount of energy used in our homes.

Cleaner indoor air
img Unlike most residential projects, our homes are designed with pure air filtration systems, energy recovery air exchangers and utilize no volatile organic chemical paints and finishes, all of which benefit the comfort of the occupants.

A Green Roof
img Our homes feature Green Roof Technology, which has not been used in any other large residential project in the state of Virginia. It is estimated this feature will increase energy efficiency by 30%, while also reducing storm water runoff and the Heat Island Effect. Green Roofs are also good for the environment.

Reduction in the Green House Effect
img By reclaiming a previously developed site, our town homes at Rocketts Landing require less energy, water, land, and materials than new suburban areas. And since no additional green space has been cleared, the community has a low environmental impact and helps reduce the Green House Effect.

What are the Benefits of Green Roofs?

Storm Water Management:

Quantity: studies from universities such as Penn State and George Mason University have confirmed that a green roof retains 60-85% of the annual rainfall.

Quality: research has also shown that green roofs filter various types of metals, hydrocarbons and other pollutants which are present in traditional roof rain water runoff.

Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI):
img Agencies such as the EPA and Environment Canada have proven that the replacement of traditional roof covering with natural vegetation reduces UHI effect by lowering the temperatures on rooftops.

Improved Air Quality:
img Roof top vegetation contributes to air quality by capturing airborne pollutants, filtering noxious gases, and reducing ambient temperature.

Energy Efficiency:
img The national research council of Canada and others have proven that green roofs can reduce cooling costs by as much as 25%.

Noise Reduction:
img Green roofs buffer outdoor noise and offer a quieter indoor environment.

Extends the life of the roof:
img Various research agencies report that a vegetated roof has a life expectancy in excess of 40 years which is as much as 3 times greater than traditional roof systems.

Fire Protection:
img German studies have shown that green roofs considerably reduce the building heat load during combustion.

Restores Ecological and Aesthetic Value:

img In addition to providing usable space, green roofs reclaim otherwise disregarded space by providing improved aesthetic variation as well as provide great bio diversity for all living organisms.

Living Space:
img The Green Roof on Scandia's Rocketts Landing town homes provide over 900 square feet of additional outdoor living space.
